Digging Ginseng (人参)

Digging up three ginseng plants with Dad, his high school classmates, their daughter, and a guide.

Today, my dad and I went to dig ginseng with two of my dad’s high school classmates and their daughter. Ginseng is a plant that grows in cool, mountainous, forested regions of the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China (Manchuria), and the Russian Far East.

To reach the digging spot, we went down a dirt path about 200 meters (660 feet) long. When we arrived, we started digging with the help of a guide.

First, we dug into the soil surrounding each plant to find its rhizome. After locating the rhizome, we loosened the soil. Finally, we pulled the plant out.

We dug up three plants. Their condition is shown in the table below:

We’ve been on many trips, but this was the only one that involved digging up plants!
